7 Spiritual Health Habits to Support Holistic Health

1. THE DAILY CHECK-IN

The first step in change is awareness. Ask yourself: "How am I feeling physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually right now?" Getting in the habit of checking in with yourself can help you better understand how you feel and what you need.
Raising awareness about spiritual health starts with ourselves. By living mindfully and prioritizing your well-being, you set a powerful example for others, conveying that spiritual health is important and worth valuing!

It's common for health professionals to encourage individuals to check in with themselves physically, mentally, and emotionally. However, the spiritual dimension is often overlooked.
Spiritual Health Professionals are trained to support you in exploring and nurturing your spiritual well-being—regardless of your beliefs or background. They can help you reflect on your inner life and cultivate a healthy, meaningful spiritual path.
Some reflective questions that explore the spiritual dimension include:

  • Do I feel a sense of purpose and meaning in my life?
  • Do I feel connected to hope, even in times of difficulty?
  • Do I feel connected to something greater than myself?
  • Do my spiritual practices bring me joy, strength, and direction?

Taking time to reflect on these questions can be an important step toward holistic well-being.

2. TAKE A BREATHING SPACE

When you feel restless, doubtful, overwhelmed or frustrated, remember to PAUSE and BREATHE. Let's not underestimate the power of simple actions. Pausing and breathing gives you a moment to centre your body, clear your mind and connect to your spirit. From this place, you will be better able to make decisions and proceed with your day in peace.
3. MOVE MORE SLOWLY

“I don’t have enough time!” is a sensation that many of us can relate to, leading us to feel frantic and anxious. It’s easy to believe in the (false) idea that we can accomplish more by moving quickly and rushing through life. However, rushing often leads to mistakes, requiring more of our time or making us feel worse. It’s amazing what can be accomplished when we slow down and live with greater intention. Today, we invite you to care for your spirits by slowing down, thus fostering greater peace, presence and serenity.
4. GET ENOUGH REST

Are you feeling cranky? On edge? Irritable? We all feel this way at times. When we do, it’s easy to point the finger at other people or our circumstances, thinking the outer world is the issue. Sometimes the outer world is the issue. But sometimes…. we’re just tired. We need rest, relaxation or sleep. Cultivating rest can take many forms. Perhaps it’s by turning off screens and sitting in silence. Perhaps it’s by spending time in nature, doing some light stretches, watching your favourite movie or going to bed earlier. Today we invite you to care for your spiritual health by taking rest, enjoying some relaxation, and prioritizing sleep! Happy resting!
5. PRACTICE GRATITUDE

Practicing gratitude is a simple way to lift your spirits and make your day a little brighter. Whether life is feeling overwhelming and hard or feeling smooth and peaceful, we invite you to care for your spiritual health by practicing gratitude. Ask yourself, “what are three things that I am grateful for today?” Remember that life doesn’t have be going perfectly to practice gratitude. Being thankful for the small things in life is just as important as the big things. Share this reminder with someone who needs it today.
6. LIVE ONE DAY AT A TIME

It’s no secret that life is full of challenges. Sometimes the challenges of life feel big, overwhelming, and heavy….because they are. Habit 6 is all about making the big things smaller by living life one day at a time. No matter what you are going through, remember that you have what you need to take care of the challenges of this day. Staying present can help you feel calmer, and help you live with greater ease.
7. BE KIND

The last six spiritual health habits have been about you, to nourish your spirit and cultivate a greater sense of peace and inner calm in your life. Now we invite you to take your calm, and spiritually-centred self into the world to make it a better place! Our final spiritual health habit involves practicing kindness towards others - in your thoughts, words and actions. A kind word or a kind deed, no matter how small, has tremendous power to uplift someone else and change the course of their day. So, go ahead! Ask yourself, “how can I be kind toward others today?”
